Is the Blues' five-loss skid all in their heads?
Kept my spreadsheet open through this skid and one thing jumps out: the five losses came after they'd banked 8 wins from their first stretch of the season. Aggregate is 456 for, 412 against across 14 - a +44 differential for a side sitting 4th on 38 points. That's a team winning tight and losing tight, which is exactly where the "mental block" argument gets its fuel. Small sample though, and I'd hedge before calling it all in the heads.
What I keep coming back to is the contrast between two numbers: 456 points scored says the attacking system is functioning; 412 conceded says the defence is leaking just enough to turn wins into losses. Same squad, same talent, if the hoodoo were purely structural you'd expect both lines to sag together, not one. I could be wrong, but the derby pressure in Super Rugby Pacific (Auckland crowds, Eden Park expectations) does tend to sit in the ears more than the legs. Funny thing is the TAB had them favourites in most of those five and the line barely moved, bookies clearly backed the talent too. You watch them start those derbies fast then go quiet once it's tight, feels like the heads go before the legs do. SweetAs touched on it, if the TAB kept them favourites through five straight and they still didn't land one, that's a mental slip costing punters real money. I got burnt loading them in a multi mid-skid, watched the line sit comfy and they choked it late. Heads gone, simple as. Next derby I'm taking the underdog + line and leaving the Blues out entirely until they prove they can close 😭💸
