Trust Taranaki away? 😂 Mate you're asking the wrong bloke, they're coming to Napier to play US. That Southland game was pretty eh, 55:19 at Stadium Taranaki, but grinding out wins at home means nothing once you get on the bus. Ask Manawatu - 27:25, our lot have copped similar up there plenty of times, turkeys get slaughtered away in this comp 🤬 So which outfit rocks up at McLean Park? The one that put 55 on Southland or the one that coughed it up in the last minutes vs Manawatu? Honestly reckon it'll be somewhere in between and that's scary enough tbh. If any of you Taranaki punters are putting them in a TAB multi for the 27th, do yourself a favour and check the line first 😱 See youse at the pub before kickoff, first round's on me if we hold you under 30 💪🙌
Heart with the team, head on pause.

Cheeky from a Hawke's Bay fan whose lot only just edged Manawatu 😂 I had Taranaki in my multi that week, cost me NZ$40. Still taking them home vs Wellington at 55:19 form though. 💸

Home form's like my wifi, great til you take it anywhere else 🤣 If any punters put Taranaki in a multi for Napier, tell your families I loved you.

SweetAsNZ, remind me of your ROI? You tipped them the same week Manawatu turned them over 🤡 Home Wellington's a different bet, away Napier is a lottery 💸
Show me your ROI first 😏

Word going round the club is the Manawatu trip woke a few boys up 😏 wouldn't read too much into either score. Details in the DMs, lads 🤫

Have a look at the Auckland game too, 28:12 at Stadium Taranaki against a proper side, that's three decent weeks at home 😤 the Manawatu trip was one bad Thursday night, happens to everyone. I'd still take them in Napier tbh, you just know the boys got a rocket after that one 🔥🙌

Don't laugh guys, but didn't the "rocket" line get said before Manawatu too? 😅 Three home wins, one away stink - I'm not sold on Napier.

JohnInvercargill84 has a point tbh, that rocket line gets wheeled out every time they lose 😂 but nah I'm backing them in Napier all day. Three home games tells you the boys CAN play - Auckland 28:12 is no joke, and the Manawatu one stank of a Thursday night trip where nobody got out of second gear. Happens to every province up and down the country 🔥 Wellington away is the real worry for mine, that's the one I'd want nothing to do with on the TAB. If they show up like they did against Southland, they'll dish it up to anyone. If they show up like Manawatu... ah well, nowt to do 💪🙌

Blokes, the "one bad Thursday night" excuse is doing a lot of heavy lifting here 😂 Auckland and Southland both came to Stadium Taranaki where we're always tall poppies. Manawatu showed what happens when someone actually front-loads the tackle on the road. Hawke's Bay away? I'd want to see the boys win ugly before I put a cent on at the TAB tbh 🤬🔥

As a plumber I fix leaks all week, and Taranaki away form is the biggest one going 😂 but nah, Southland didn't come to Stadium Taranaki to lie down, they got SMASHED 55:19. That's real quality. Manawatu was one stink night, happens. I'm backing the boys in Napier 🔥💪

Sorry if this is a dumb question 😅 but how does one stink Thursday night in Manawatu just get forgiven, while Southland getting smashed becomes proof they're good? Didn't everyone say the same thing before Manawatu too? 🤔 I'm keen to see Hawke's Bay before I believe anything.

Fair question mate, that's how footy works 😂 both games true, but the Southland one showed the ceiling. Hawke's Bay away will tell us which Taranaki turns up 🔥
One love, one side ❤️

SteveAuckland mate you've got it right 😂 I coached juniors long enough to know, one magic night at Stadium Taranaki means nadda till they front at Napier. Then we'll talk 🔥

Watched the Manawatu game from my couch, still haven't forgiven them 😂 Steve asking the real questions while everyone's already booking Napier accommodation 🤣
Only serious one here — barely.

Because "ceiling" needs more than one decent half against Southland. Where's the source on that ceiling, exactly? Napier receipts please, then I'll listen.

Big price on Taranaki putting 30+ on Southland then folding to Manawatu the next week, took the TAB line twice and got burned once 😭 First one landed, second didn't. I'll trust them again in Napier only if the halfback turns up, otherwise my bankroll stays in the pocket and I'll just enjoy a beer watching it burn.
Value over a big price 💸

@Supporter_Life chasing back-to-back lines is how punters get cleaned out, heard the same from a mate close to the Taranaki camp that the intensity at training dropped off a cliff after Southland 😏 word going round is the halfback situation is being sorted before Napier, but those who know, know. Take that for what it's worth 🤫

@Wing_Fan "mate close to the camp" 😏 sure thing, mate. Funny how every punter's got an insider the week after their multi flops. And in reality you just took the line like everyone else, eh?
Here to argue, not to nod along.

@LockLegend to be fair, plenty of people do know someone at their club, doesn't mean they're making it up 😅 But yeah, hard to verify. I just watch the footy and still get it wrong anyway 🤔

@Supporter_Life as a Manawatu local I was stoked with that result but even I didn't see it coming after they smashed Southland 😅 backing the same team twice on the TAB in back-to-back weeks is brave, that's why I stick to $5 multis I expect to lose. Do you reckon the halfback thing is real or are people just looking for someone to blame? 🤔
Learning from the veterans, go easy 🙏

As a Southland fan this thread hurts 😅 but honestly the TAB line after they smashed us was always going to be dodgy, teams love to take their foot off the next week. Thanks for explaining the halfback stuff Jess23, still learning the fine details myself 🙏

@JoshBeliever spot on about the line, mate, I loaded up on Taranaki giving the points after the Southland game and it didn't land, heads just weren't in it. Chasing a team off a blowout win is the fastest way to hand the TAB your bankroll, learned that one the hard way more than once. 😭

Wing_Fan's hearing the same whispers I am, which tells me something 🤫 my source reckons the legs were fine against Manawatu, heads just went walkabout after the Southland win. Halfback call's apparently already made behind closed doors, just not announced yet. Screenshot this one, we'll see who's grinning after Napier 😏

@JackSidestep honest question from a newbie here - how do you even know if the halfback call is actually made if nobody's announced it? Seems like it'd be easy for a source to just guess. Heads going walkabout after a big win makes sense though, I've seen our local lads do the same thing 😅 Maybe I'm wrong but I'd wait for the team sheet before believing anything 🤔

@LockLegend you're probably right about nine out of ten of these "camp sources", granted. My rule is simple: unnamed mate, no named player, no weight. That said, halfback calls do leak out of provinces early enough, you hear things at club trainings long before anything's announced. I'll believe Wing_Fan when the team sheet actually says it.
Sample first, conclusions after.

KE KevFan Newcomer★☆☆☆☆ · 17 posts 29 Sep 2026, 8:56 pm
Tramping's rule is about right. Unnamed mate with no name attached is worth nothing on the TAB, I've learnt that the expensive way. Burnt a chunk of bankroll last season on a "camp whisper" that the halves were being rested, never happened, multi gone, lesson paid in full 😭 That said, if you've genuinely got a name before teams drop, that's real edge and it moves the line early. Problem is most of us hear "someone's injured" third-hand and throw NZ$20 at it like it's gospel. I'll keep watching the market instead. If the line moves Tuesday night, something's up whether a mate told you or not 💸

KevFan, what were you paying for that whisper, a pub pint or actual NZ$ on the TAB? Either way, the lesson's the same one I keep making to mates: if nobody will put a name to it, the "leak" is worth exactly what you paid. MaulTragic, half the pub knowing weeks early is a different thing, that's a real source, just with extra steps.
Numbers are honest, takes aren't.

@Scrum10 the pub pint versus TAB question is the right test, yeah. MaulTragic's pub example cuts both ways though - "half the pub knew" a week early sounds more like someone talked than a real leak with sourcing behind it. I'd add one filter: did the thing that leaked actually change the line? If the TAB never moved, the whisper was noise whatever the source.
Sample first, conclusions after.

@RotoruaLoyal the line-movement filter is the right one, and I'd add a second: check whether the leak even matched what happened. I keep a running sheet on this stuff, and half the "insider knowledge" I've logged over the seasons never showed up in the team sheet. I could be wrong, butpub talk usually just means someone's cousin plays reserves.
Context beats a bare stat.
