Canterbury covering narrow away wins, is the TAB line too generous?
Canterbury giving a line away from home after 25:24 at North Harbour? No chance I'm touching that, two one-score escapes in a row and Manawatu just hung 40 on Auckland in their own yard. That 3 October line in Palmerston North looks tight enough already, if anything the value's with Manawatu on the plus. I'd rather leave my tab alone than pay for the away points 😭
Value over a big price 💸
Ran the tape on both of those Canterbury games this morning and the Harbour one especially was closer than the scoreboard. Two one-score escapes on the road is a real pattern in a small sample though, and Manawatu putting 40 on Auckland away jumps off the page at me. I could be wrong, but I'd want the line a couple of points tighter before touching it 📊
Context beats a bare stat.

Rob, 40 points on Auckland away tells me plenty about Manawatu's attack, but they'd just conceded 36 to Waikato the week before, a two-score loss. Canterbury's defence leaked 24 at Harbour, sure, yet they still won it. Line being generous? Possibly, but "jumping off the page" cuts both ways: a team giving up 34+ twice in a fortnight isn't laying points confidently either. I'll believe the tighter line argument when someone shows me Manawatu stopping anyone.
Hype isn't an argument.
Queenstown51, they still had to survive Harbour by a point though mate. Line smells right to me, I'm on Manawatu getting the start at the TAB. 🤡💸
Show me your ROI first 😏
Napier_Legend I'm with you on the Manawatu start, but I'm not paying full price for it either. The angle I keep coming back to: Canterbury's away record is doing the heavy lifting in that price, yet Harbour by one is the only actual road evidence we've got. Manawatu at home off a 40-burger in Auckland? That's a short turnaround for the TAB to move it enough to make backing the favourites worth the trouble.
I priced it roughly Canterbury by 4-5, so anything above a converted try of start and I'm on Manawatu getting the points. Keeping it to a single, no room in the multi this weekend after last Saturday gutted my bankroll, lesson learned the hard way there. 💸
SweetAsNZ has a point buried in there, but one road game with a sample size of exactly one isn't evidence of anything except that Harbour nearly beat them. Two escapes versus a 13-point home win over Southland - I'm not convinced either side of the line is obviously wrong. Show me Manawatu's defence holding someone before you talk me into the start.
Numbers are honest, takes aren't.
Put NZ$20 on the Manawatu start last night and the line's already tightened a tick this morning, which tells me I'm not the only mug who saw it. My angle's simpler than the sample size debate: Canterbury won both those tight ones at home-ish venues against sides that sat in the contest, and Manawatu just proved they can trade punches in a shootout. If it turns into another 30-something scoreboard, one-point escapes don't survive that. Getting the start in Palmerston North is the only side of the line where the price still pays for the risk.
Lesson from Saturday though: lumped the odd try scorer into a multi and the rest landed fine while that leg tipped over. So whatever you take here, keep the stake one you can lose without checking the app all Sunday. 💸
Bankroll discipline wins.
KevFan, the line moving after your NZ$20 doesn't tell you the market agrees, it tells you one punter bet into a thin NPC market. SweetAsNZ said it herself: one road game is the entire evidence base, and 34:21 over Southland at home doesn't exactly scream title form either. I'll believe Canterbury deserve favouritism when I see it, not because the TAB opened a number and people chased it.
Sample first, conclusions after.
Scrum10's got it right that 34:21 over Southland is respectable, but I've landed on the Manawatu side of this. A 13-pointer at home against a mid-table side means nothing to me when the other mob just dropped 40 on Auckland at Eden Park, that's the form line I'll pay for, and I've had NZ$30 on the start already. Value over a big price, and this one stinks of value before the market fully catches up. 🔥
Value over a big price 💸
PaulOpenside, define "form line" before you stake NZ$30 on it, a 40:34 shoot-out at Eden Park where Auckland leaked 34 tells you more about Auckland's defence than Manawatu's attack. And KevFan, a line that "tightened a tick" after one NZ$20 bet is a story you're telling yourself. One road win each, small samples both ways — I'll believe the market's wrong when I see it on 3 October.
Sample first, conclusions after.
Jackal, "value" on a two-point sample is just hope with decimals. RotoruaLoyal's right - 40:34 says Auckland's defence is leaky, receipts on Manawatu's defence please.
Winning away by one at Harbour is the telling part. Away lines cost real margin, and Canterbury's road record doesn't cover that price. NZ$25 Manawatu start for me. 💸
Value over a big price 💸
Everyone here trusting Eden Park defence like it's gospel 😂 Auckland leaking 34 means nothing come 3 October in Palmy where the wind will turn that match into a scrap. Two escapes in a row from Canterbury yet they still got the job done, our lot never make it easy but I've seen them get stuck into red-and-black up front before. Backing them all day at home 🔥💪
Heart with the team, head on pause.
Still learning this stuff so don't laugh 😅 but StandsGuyLoyal's wind point got me, does the TAB even adjust much for Palmy weather, or is the line just form-based? 🤔
Dumb questions are my specialty.
Heard something about Canterbury's travel prep from a mate down south 🤫 won't say more till it firms up. Wind in Palmy is the real line-mover though, TAB's slow on that one 😏
Those who know, know.
Nah our lot never make it easy, one-point scrap in Palmy sounds like us all over 😅 bit worried about that wind though, seen more than one Canterbury backline get baked into kicking tennis up there. Taking the NZ$25 start is gutsy but tbh I'd want the points too 🔥
You don't abandon your own.
